As you disembark the ship you’re welcomed with the
pulsating sounds of the steel pan. There is no better
way to start a day on an island! As you exit the port
you come directly into contact with tons of taxi drivers
and tour guides. Everyone seems to be some sort of tour
guide or have some amazing place to take you.
There are tons of shops, bars and restaurants at the
port so you can save your shopping for just before you
get back on the ship. However, you may want to ask if
the shops close early on Sundays and public holidays.
We decided to do Antigua on our own and got a tour
(mini bus) that took us and several other people through
the island. I think it cost us $20 each and we made sure
to confirm the price, where we were going and what time
we would be back before we left. Again we didn’t pay
until we arrived back at the pier.
Antigua is a beautiful island with lots of history.
Here are some of the things we did/saw on this tour:
drove through the countryside where we saw how the
people lived, farmed (saw a banana plantation) and
played (cricket). On this drive we also saw one of the
tours offered by the ship. The zip-line tour where
you’re harnessed and hooked up to cables. You then ride
the cables through the forest, from tree top to tree
top. This is a must the next time we visit Antigua.
visited historic sites such as Nelson’s Dockyard and the
Dockyard Museum. Great place to visit if you’re into
history, especially sailing.
Shirley heights. Here you have an amazing view from the
tops of the hill and it also makes for great pictures.
If I recall correctly, you can see Barbuda from here (I
may be wrong though).
Darkwood beach. See the pictures in this section for
some images of the beach. A awesome beach that’s not
crowded at all. Perfect white sand, beautiful Caribbean
sun and cold drinks at the bar. No snorkeling here,
since there’s really not much to see.
The driver dropped us off at Darkwood beach to spend a couple of hours and he did arrive back at the time he said
he would. We then made our way back to the pier where we
paid him and said goodbyes!
If you’re looking for souvenirs, t-shirts and art
(yes there are a couple of galleries with some unique
prints and island scenes) be sure to check out the many
shops at the pier.
The only concern I have about doing your own tour as we
did, is that you can get stuck with a driver who is not
talkative. So you end up driving around the island
without knowing where you are or what the sights are.
