After we checked in aboard the Crown Princess in San Juan we didn’t venture back into Old San Juan as many passengers did. We used this time to get to know the layout or the ship and the many amenities. However after we disembarked on the final day, we did have a lot of time to kill before our flight home so we spent some time in Old San Juan.

As you get off the ship (see disembarkation under the SHIP link above) there is a place where you can store your luggage so you won’t have to lug around them as you explore this beautiful city.

There are free street cars/trolleys (can’t remember the exact name they were called) that one can get on at the many stops throughout the city if you don’t feel like walking too much. We got onto one right at the pier outside the place where you can store your luggage. The people who worked the luggage storage area told us about the free transport and even gave us a map of the city to use.

A great place to get off the streetcar is in front of the Plaza De Armas City Hall to begin your tour on foot. There are many beautiful old buildings and the street is cobblestone paved so be sure to wear comfortable shoes (ladies you may have problems with pumps or wedges). There’s an area (can’t remember the name of the street, but I’m sure you can ask around) with many outlet stores like Puma, Coach etc where we got many great deals.

Try to find your way to the San Juan Cathedral on a street called Del Cristo, it’s simply amazing to see such an old church in the new world. Another thing that should be on your must-see list is the San Cristobal Fort. You may want to get a guide for this since he/she can tell you more about the history of the fort and the importance it played in Puerto Rico’s development.

Be sure to have a bottle of water with you since it does get very hot and Old San Juan is a bit hilly.

Old San Juan is great city with superior shopping, delectable food, friendly people and many places to take great pictures.
