We had reserved the Caribbean Pirates Extravaganza
excursion so we were up and ready to go early. Our
daughters heard that Orlando Bloom was on the ship while
shooting Pirates of the Caribbean so they didn’t need
any encouragement to wake early.
Caribbean Pirates Extravaganza is on the Brig Unicorn
(see the pics in this section) a ship used in some of
the scenes in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean. We did
confirm this with the Captain when we were onboard.
The morning started of cool and clouded over. It’s a
short walk to the pier from the Crown Princess to catch
the Brig Unicorn. It took a few minutes for the Brig to
dock and for us to get onboard. As we boarded our
daughters were keenly watching the other passengers,
since we heard that one of the kids in the tour usually
gets to fire the cannons.
We were not impressed when only after about 5 minutes
sailing there was a downpour. It just happened that we
were sitting under the covered part of the deck so we
didn’t get wet. As if someone turned off the tap so did
the rain stop as we headed up the leeward coast of the
island. There was music playing, snacks sharing and the
crew was busy manning the sails.
We were then briefed on what was to happen as we
approached Pigeon Island.
1st , Someone would fire the cannon to kill the
pirates that were on the island. Yep, one of our girls
got the opportunity to fire it.
2nd We would be tendered ashore where we would
participate in a treasure hunt. We were given maps and
were briefed on the actual hunt when we arrived on the
island.
We were met by 2 pirates on the island who told us
the rules of the treasure hunt. There were 6 keys hidden
on the island and your goal is to find as many keys as
you can. If the key you found opens the treasure chest
when you get back onboard the Brig unicorn you get
what’s inside.
The final words from the pirate... NEVER TRUST A
PIRATE!
We did the hunt with the use of our trusty map and
clues the pirate gave us. I think we found 3 of the 6
keys.
After the hunt was over we had the option to hike up to
ruins of 18th-century Fort Rodney (be prepared for some
exercise) or to just enjoy the beach. We choose to do
the hike and do the beach after. Though it was a bit
exhausting, the view from the peak was amazing. We could
see the Brig Unicorn out in the ocean, many parts of the
coast and island as well as the Sandals resorts in the
distance. (See the pics in this section for some of the
views we had).
After we tendered back to the Brig Unicorn it was time
to try the keys we found during the treasure hunt. With
Caribbean music in the air and rum punch it made for a
great sail back to the pier. The crew were amazing and
always willing to answer any questions you may have
(please do tip them as you leave). The captain also
allowed our girls to sail the ship and they loved every
minute of it. What an experience for them… be on the
ship where Orlando was on, fire the cannons and captain
the ship.
This took us most of the morning so we headed back to
the Crown Princess for a quick shower and lunch before
we headed off to Castries, the capital city.
After lunch we took a water taxi over to Castries
where we browsed through the Market and other shops.
Castries is like any other small Caribbean city with
nothing that really grabs your attention.
As a fun way recommend the Caribbean Pirates
Extravaganza as fun way to spend your morning in St
Lucia.
Before I forget… One of the keys my daughters found did
open the treasure chest and she got a voucher for a
gemstone at Diamonds International. You should have seen
her face when she went to claim it... priceless. I could
tell you where you can find the keys and which one will
open the chest, but the curse of the Caribbean Pirates
Extravaganza will haunt me the rest of my life!
