We docked at Crown bay (a bit remote) and would rather
it was Havensight since we much prefer that part of the
island. After a hearty breakfast we headed off the ship
only to be met by pushy taxi drivers. They never
listened to where we wanted to go or answer any
questions. All you got was them trying to force you onto
their taxis. TIP: Don’t step onto a taxi without first
letting them know exactly where you want to go (they’ll
try to convince you to go where most of their other
passengers are going) and make sure you set the cost of
your trip beforehand so you don’t get stuck with a huge
bill at the end. If you’ve never been to St Thomas be
prepared for crazy drivers and very hilly roads. A
couple from England that was on our taxi asked the drive
if he learned to drive on a roller coaster. Also note
that the taxis are basically pick-up trucks with seats
and a canopy added to the back tray. No seat belts and
open (except for a bar) on the sides.
Note: Originally we wanted to book the Sea Blaster
Powerboat & Snorkeling excursion but were told it was
sold out. So we decided to do some snorkeling and
shopping on our own.
We finally got a taxi that would take us to snorkel at
Coki beach, then pick us up later in the day and drop us
off in Charlotte Amile to get our shopping done.
NOTE: We did NOT pay the taxi driver upfront since we
wanted to be assured he would not leave us stranded at
Coki beach. FYI our driver turned out to be a very nice
man who did live up to all that he promised us.
Coki beach is beautiful. White powdery sand as you
would expect in the Caribbean, chair and umbrella
rentals and there were even staff from the bar on the
beach coming around asking if you wanted a drink. Coral
world is next to Coki beach so if you wanted to take a
break from the beach you could also go there. (There is
an entry fee to Coral World)
You can rent snorkel gear from one of the many shops on
the beach, but since we snorkel quite a bit we brought
our own gear. To the far left and right of the beach
there is some coral/rock formation where you can
snorkel. This was the first time we ever encountered an
octopus. What a beautiful creature! Now we have
something to mention whenever we speak about this cruise
and St Thomas.
Our taxi showed up exactly the time he said he would
and took us into town. Hold-on! As mentioned the place
is very hilly and they drive like maniacs.
If you’re shopping for crafts, t-shirts, etc you can
visit the mall at Havensight as we did is our previous
cruise. This time we stayed in town and shopped for
booze, gifts for friends and fragrances.
Headed back to the ship (you have to taxi back...
long walk) very tired from the long day.
St Thomas is nice but it seems there are just too many
visitors. You don’t get that true Caribbean feel!
