The first advice I can
give anyone going on vacation is to plan for
unexpected emergencies. It was a lot cheaper for
us to fly out of Buffalo NY rather than Toronto.
This meant we had to catch a connecting flight
in Philadelphia to San Juan. BTW, if you connect
in Philly, make sure you have enough time
between connecting flights since it’s a huge
airport and the gates are really spread apart.
We’re not sure what really happened, but we arrive in San Juan and our luggage was
“somewhere” other than with us. After we made a
claim at the airline office we headed to our
hotel (see “San Juan”
under the “islands” link above for more info
about the hotel we stayed at) to try and
relax. We were in severe panic mode, since we
had less than a day to board the Crown Princess
and we had no luggage.

Thankfully my wife is an excellent
packer and knew to prepare for such
emergencies. She had packed several
important things in our carry-on
luggage. This gave us the opportunity to
at least enjoy the amazing pool with the
cascading waterfall while we stressed
about our lost luggage.
Always pack necessary items in your carry-on
luggage such as bathing suit, extra clothes,
medicine (be sure to check with airline rules
for liquids, etc.) and basic toiletries in the
event your luggage goes missing.
Below is a list in download format that you
can use as a guide for packing for a cruise. I’m
sure you won’t pack the same items but it’s a
good guide to get you started.
Right-click your mouse on the “Packing List”

After you’ve printed it out, simply check off
or highlight the items as you pack it into your
luggage. This helps you keep track of what
you’ve already packed.

Another tip that was shared with me some time
ago. Scan all important documents such as
passport, drivers license and health cards. Then
email it to one of your online email accounts
such as gmail, yahoo or hotmail. This allows you
in an emergency (in the event your passport gets lost) to log on at any internet café and print a
copy of the lost item. Some people also photo
copy the same items and have it separate from
the original (different luggage) in the event
the original goes missing.
One important packing tip -- If traveling with a companion or spouse, divide your checked items into two (or more) suitcases that way, if one is lost, you will both have some clothing to wear! It would be terrible for your spouse to have all of his clothes and you to have nothing but your carry-on.
BTW as promised by the airline, our luggage arrived at our hotel room about 6 pm
the same day it went missing. That’s when happy
hour started for us.
